Though extinct for about 12,000 years, it is common knowledge that the American Lion is a direct ancestor to the modern African Lion. But compared to the African Lion's 390 pounds, the American Lion was a monster at 520 pounds. This massive cat with three inch canines roamed thoughout four different continents and is believed to have been the widest ranging land mammal of all time. He was a swift, powerful, and intelligent hunter who ran out his prey before attacking. This skull is 18 1/2" x 11 1/2" x 12 1/2" and actually dwarfs the Saber Tooth Cat skull.
Extinct for 12,000 years, Smilodon californicus has become a widely recognized symbol of power and beauty. While attacking, the Saber Tooth Tiger ambushed its prey, stunning its victim by throwing one paw over the shoulders and the other over the nose. Digging in its razor-like claws, it pushed the victim's head into the best position for inflicting the deadly wound, severing the jugular with a lethal bite from its sabers. This skull is 13" x 8" x 12".
The modern day lion's powerful teeth reflect its tendancy to feed mainly on meat. The large canines are designed for stabbing and tearing. This skull is 13" x 8" x 9 3/4".
Also known as mountain lion and puma, this smaller species is descended from the giant North American Lion. This swift feline is strictly carnivorous, and with its long sharp teeth and powerful jaws it can break a deer's neck in an instant. This skull is 7" x 5" x 6".
